10. The known universe is made up of 50,000,000,000 galaxies. There are between 100,000,000,000 and 1,000,000,000,000 stars in a normal galaxy. In the Milky Way alone there might be as many 100 billion Earth-like planets.

Isn’t the world amazing!

ZINC DEFICIENCY

Zinc deficiency can occur in soil, plants, and animals. In animals, including humans, it is defined either qualitatively as insufficient zinc to meet the needs of the body and thereby causing clinical manifestations, or quantitatively as a serum zinc level below the normal range; however, serum zinc is not a reliable biomarker for zinc status in humans, as a decrease in serum concentration is only detectable after long-term or severe depletion

Typical signs of zinc deficiency in a person are loss of appetite, poor sense of smell and taste, tendency towards depression, white marks on fingernails, pale skin, frequent infections, low fertility, stretch marks, prostate problems, stunted growth, mental problems, poor wound healing, a poor immune system, diarrhea, mental lethargy, poor appetite, rough skin, weight loss, ache and greasy skin.

Zinc plays an essential role in numerous biochemical pathways. It affects many organ systems, including the skin, gastrointestinal tract, central nervous system, and immune, skeletal, and reproductive systems. A lack of zinc thus has numerous manifestations, the most common of which are an increased rates of diarrhea, pneumonia, and malaria

To treat zinc deficiency, it is best to advise a person to increase foods that are high in zinc content within their diet. These foods are oysters, ginger root, lamb, pecan nuts, dry split peas, haddock, green peas, shrimps, turnips, Brazil nuts, egg yolks, whole wheat grain, rye, oats, peanuts and almonds. Pumpkin seeds and pumpkin seed butter are excellent sources of this vital mineral.

If you have a metabolic disorder like Pyroluria for example, you have problems assimilating and converting the zinc from your food as easily, so supplementation with a zinc supplement is suggested as you do not retain sufficient levels for energy and good health.

NB  if you choose a zinc supplement to replenish you zinc levels, please make sure you take it after meals as you can experience nausea on an empty stomach, which really defeats the purpose of wishing for better health and feeling vibrant!

To find out more about your own zinc status, see your natural health practitioner for a consultation. In my clinic I use a zinc tally test to ascertain your zinc status.  It is a simple taste test and gives instant results.

Till next week, eat, look and feel well.

LIVING OFF THE GRID

What does that mean?  It means living without the use of power generated by organisations.  It means self-sufficiency.

Living in isolation isn’t necessary but living without the normal provided services which cost us money and resources and instead using nature’s resources is all part of living off the grid.

You would expect to have a bit of land, solar panels potentiall, a creek for water?  You would expect to have to grow all your own food and farm animals, provide your own clothing or buy cheaply.  Would you be on a pension?  Would you rely on the government?  The idea is no.  You return to a natural way of living before societies constructed our needs and wants models in the media.

It would take a bit of work and intelligent reading to know who to live off the grid if you have been societised.  After all so many expect a pizza delivery, a supermarket shop, a clothes shop, a telephone or internet service, a tv channel, parties to attend and concerts to see.   Well living off the grid doesn’t preclude you shopping or attending social events, but it does mean you have to find a way to generate your own power instead of using provided electricity services etc.

I have found such an inspiring short video for you of a lady by the name of Jill Redwood.  She has been very happy self-sufficient and living off the grid for 30 years and her story is inspiring.  This is a must watch feel good video.  She grows her own food, repairs her own house, makes her own cheese from her own goats,  channels water from a stream and irrigates her crops, and she has a dunny (outside toilet).

I remember living in a caravan while building my own home twenty- six years ago and the emptying the toilet bucket never really gets comfortable, but the rest of it was awesome.  Living on a block of land with two children running in nature whilst you construct your home.  The home was far too big and felt like a mansion once we got out of the caravan after 16 months, however  once you experience living simply, it does grow on you and I have a hankering for it still in many ways.  Perhaps mine will be the grey nomad existence?  Who knows.

However, this lady has it sorted and living alone, finds extreme comfort in her lifestyle.

MOBILE PHONES AND HEMORRHOIDS

“Well there is another interesting topic.  Did you know that you can get hemorrhoids from mobile phone usage?
Perhaps not many people really think about this but it is a real problem in todays social media world.

People sit on the toilet too long and take their mobile phones in with them and read.  Yes they do!
I have clients who confess and I know people who do it.  People these days just don’t go to the toilet to evacuate their bowels.  People go there for a break, a respite, a quiet minute.

In our hectic lives of emails and social media, people will even be addicted enough to take their mobile devices in with them and sit on the toilet awaiting nature’s processes whilst being completely devoid of time contrainsts.  Their mind is a frenzy of activity and their body just lets go.  Then it finishes letting go and their mind doesn’t even notice.

How many levels of candy crush does it take to get a hemorrhoid?  Why is this linked?

Sitting on the toilet in this position once you have competed your ablutions so to speak, will place pressure on the under-carriage.  The muscles aren’t made for half an hour of download time.  Leave your mp3 downloads to sitting at the desk or chair.  Your sphincter muscle will overstretch from the downward pressure that toilet posture will produce and the next thing you know there is a stretched area and whammo your veins are popping through and you have a hemorrhoid arrive on the next push episode.

Wow Katherine, you are being graphic today.  Well it is because life can be a pain in the arse at the best of times when life’s pressures build up without adding to the physiology of the cause and effect process.

My advice is have a laugh, live your life without your phone for at least this long.  Go the the toilet because you need to and go outside or to your workstation to check your emails the old fashioned way.

Well actually I expect this is an age old problem of reading on the toilet.  It used to be newspapers or articles in a magazine.  I am sure we have all seen the movies and tv shows depicting this as a funny joke against “dear ol’ dad”. These days however I am hearing many women complaining of it also.  Leave the reading to the length of time it takes you to do your business and remember the outside world will still be there when you get out of the cubicle to embrace and enjoy.

Here is an article about hemorrhoids for the uninitiated”.
